Authentic Phidippides Run 2026: race guide
The 10th Authentic Phidippides Run is an international 485.3 km ultra-distance road race from Athens to Sparta and back to Athens, starting on Thursday 19 November 2026 at 06:00 with an overall 98-hour time limit, according to the official site authenticphidippidesrun.com. This year's anniversary edition is dedicated to the route's originator and creator, Takis Skoulis, and for the first time offers an optional 524.9 km extension to Marathon, open only to runners who have already finished the race in a previous year. Below is the route, the full checkpoint-by-checkpoint time-limit schedule, the safety rules, and registration and entry cost, exactly as the organiser itself publishes them.
What it is and who organises it
The International Authentic Phidippides Run is an ultra-distance race on open public road from Athens to Sparta and back, 485.3 kilometres. It is organised by the non-profit sports and cultural association "Authentic Phidippides Run" (registration no. 34245, tax no. 996461641), founded in 2024 as the successor to the earlier "Athenian Runners" association. This year's tenth edition (19-23 November 2026) is an anniversary edition explicitly dedicated to the route's originator and creator, Takis Skoulis: "In the footsteps of Takis Skoulis".
The race is held under the patronage of the Hellenic Parliament, the Region of Attica, the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport, and the General Secretariat of Sport, with SEGAS (Hellenic Athletics Federation) approval, an IAU (International Association of Ultrarunners) Bronze Label, and a suitability endorsement/patronage from EOSLMAU. Media sponsors are ERT and ERA Sport. The race ambassador is Balkan and Pan-Hellenic champion and Olympian Maria Polyzou. The organiser itself describes the route as "one of the most demanding ultra-distance routes, and the largest on open road in the world" — a promotional claim of its own, which this article reports as the organiser's claim rather than an independently verified record.
The route: Athens-Sparta-Athens, 485.3 km
The route follows the ancient road: Athens - Elefsina - Megara - Ancient Corinth - Agios Vasileios - Ancient Kleonai - Ancient Nemea - Malandreni - Lyrkeia - Karya, climbs Mount Artemisio to 1,227 m (including a 4 km dirt-road stretch), descends to Nestani, passes through Tegea and joins the Tripoli-Sparta road, finishing at the Leonidas statue in Sparta's stadium. The return follows exactly the same route, for a total distance of 485.3 kilometres — roughly 243 km each way (242.5 km Athens to Sparta, 242.8 km Sparta to Athens).
The organiser's own materials also describe the main race as "490 km" in titles and introductory text — on the homepage, in the Race Announcement and in the Race Regulations title — while the detailed, cumulative cutoff table in Regulations Article 6 totals 485.3 km. This guide follows the table's precise cumulative figure of 485.3 km, which also matches the bib2bib catalog.
Across the Athens-Sparta leg and back there are 77 aid tables in total (water, isotonic drinks, snacks), with hot food — including a non-meat option — at 11 central stations.
Schedule and checkpoint time limits
The race starts and finishes at the Ancient Agora of Athens, with an overall 98-hour limit for the Athens-Sparta-Athens course. The official Race Regulations give the exact cutoff (hours after the start) at each central station, with cumulative distance:
- Megara — 39.4 km — cutoff 5:30 hours
- Examilia — 86.0 km — cutoff 12:30 hours
- Ancient Nemea — 118.1 km — cutoff 18:00 hours
- Nestani — 168.2 km — cutoff 29:00 hours
- Tegea — 191.6 km — cutoff 33:00 hours
- Sparta (midpoint) — 242.5 km — cutoff 43:00 hours
- Tegea, on the way back — 293.4 km — cutoff 57:15 hours
- Nestani, on the way back — 316.9 km — cutoff 62:00 hours
- Ancient Nemea, on the way back — 366.9 km — cutoff 73:45 hours
- Examilia, on the way back — 399.1 km — cutoff 80:45 hours
- Megara, on the way back — 445.6 km — cutoff 90:15 hours
- Athens, main-race finish — 485.3 km — cutoff 98:00 hours (Monday 23/11, 08:00)
New this year: "In the Footsteps of the Athenian Army" to Marathon
For the first time this year, the organiser offers finishers of the Authentic Phidippides Run the option to continue, following the steps of General Miltiades and his soldiers, on to Marathon — a total distance of 524.9 kilometres, with a 100-hour finish cutoff from the start and an intermediate exclusion cutoff of 93 hours to reach Athens (at the 485.3 km mark); meaning the final 39.6 km to Marathon must be covered within 7 hours. The last runner's finish at Marathon is scheduled for Monday 23 November 2026 at 10:00.
The condition for taking part in this year's anniversary extension is a valid finish of the Authentic Phidippides Run in a previous year — not this year's edition. The organiser states explicitly that this condition applies only to this anniversary 10th edition; from the next edition onward, the condition will be a valid finish within 93 hours at the Ancient Agora (Mikis Theodorakis Square) in a previous year. Taking the extension is optional and must be declared at registration; the route cannot be changed during the race, and per the official Race Announcement, anyone who has declared they will take the extension must reach Marathon to be considered to have finished.
History: the ancient mission of Pheidippides
Per the organiser's own narrative, it was 490 BC when the Persian army was advancing on Athens. The Athenians sent the day-runner Pheidippides to Sparta to request the Spartan army's help; the Spartans could not march before the full moon and promised to set out immediately afterward. On the way back, crossing Mount Parthenio, Pheidippides saw — per the same narrative — a vision of the god Pan, who prophesied an Athenian victory over the vastly more numerous Persians.
The Athenian army, under General Miltiades and supported by a thousand Plataeans, went on to defeat the Persians at Marathon. The modern race "revives this historic journey, following the ancient route as faithfully as possible", as the organiser itself describes it, without the official site citing any specific ancient source for the narrative.
Safety, aid stations and key race rules
Every athlete is required to carry a GPS tracking device with an SOS button for the entire race (a €150 charge applies if it is not returned), and there is medical coverage from doctors, paramedics and EKAB, with six hospitals along the route (Attikon, Thriasio in Elefsina, Corinth General, Argolida General in Argos, the Panarkadiko "Evangelistria" in Tripoli, and Sparta General) on standby under an EKEPY operational plan. Any medication use without approval from a race doctor is strictly prohibited; the organiser does not supply medication, not even painkillers.
From sunset to sunrise, athletes must wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing, a lit headlamp and a red rear signal light (with spare batteries), and carry a brightly coloured rain or wind jacket. Runners are advised to keep to the left side of the road, two runners are not allowed to run side by side on fast roads, audio playback devices are banned, and crew support is only allowed at the organiser's own aid tables (within 30 metres); help given elsewhere leads to disqualification. Arriving late at any central station automatically puts an athlete out of the race. Entrants under 18 are not permitted.
Registration, entry fee and what it covers
Entries are submitted online at authenticphidippidesrun.com/registrations by 30 September 2026, the same deadline as paying the entry fee; a recent original medical certificate of good health (dated no more than 6 months before the start) is also required, emailed or uploaded to the registration site by 15 October 2026. The official site publishes a price only for runners permanently resident in Greece (at a stated 50% discount): €300 if registered and paid by 28 February 2026, €350 from 1 March through 30 September 2026; for the optional Marathon extension, the fee for Greece-resident runners is €350 regardless of registration date. The site does not publish a separate figure for runners not permanently resident in Greece.
The entry fee covers a race number, electronic timing, a finisher medal and diploma, a souvenir T-shirt, a finisher gift, transport of personal supplies to designated tables, medical services, transport for anyone who does not finish, food and drink at the aid tables, hot meals at 11 central stations, rest services at 11 central stations, and the GPS device. It does not cover hotels, or crew meals or transport. Cancellations are accepted with a refund (minus bank fees) until 30/9/2026; after that date only a transfer to the following year's edition is allowed, minus certain costs.
Practical notes: contact, and what is not published
Official website: authenticphidippidesrun.com. Contact: pheidippidesauthenticrun@gmail.com, Athens. The organiser also maintains Facebook, Instagram and YouTube pages, per its own release as published on runningnews.gr.
The pages checked for this guide (29/9/2026) do not publish a registered-athlete count or a course-record time from a past edition — the official site's Results section was not opened line by line for this fact-check, so no specific finishing time or record is stated here. The one participation detail the organiser does publish is that a wheelchair athlete took part in the 9th edition, for the second consecutive year.
